We rang in the New Year at the Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort and Spa, staying from December 28 through January 2. It was our first time visiting Grand Cayman, and I want to give you an honest take on the resort, what we loved, where it fell short, and who I think it is best suited for.
Let me start with the obvious. This resort sits directly on Seven Mile Beach, and the access is outstanding. We were roughly 30 steps from our lounge chairs to the water. The beach itself is pristine, with soft white sand and calm, clear turquoise water. It is one of the most beautiful stretches of beach I have seen in the Caribbean. If beachfront access is your top priority, the Westin delivers.
For families who have never done a Caribbean resort trip, this is a really approachable starting point. The resort is well-organized, the staff is friendly, and it feels comfortable without being overwhelming. You get the Caribbean experience without any of the logistical stress that can come with more remote or boutique destinations.
The resort had a great energy during our visit. Families were everywhere, kids were playing on the beach, and there was a lively but not chaotic atmosphere around the pool and restaurant areas. It felt like a place designed for families to enjoy together, which is exactly what we were looking for during the holidays.
One highlight of our stay was meeting Ayu, the on-site Luminous representative. Having advisor support at the resort level made a real difference. She helped coordinate a few things during our stay and checked in to make sure everything was going smoothly. That kind of personal touch matters, especially during a busy peak-season visit.
This was probably our biggest frustration. During peak New Year’s week, the pool area was packed. Finding chairs before 8 a.m. was a challenge, and by mid-morning, the pool deck felt sardine-level crowded. If you are visiting during the holidays, plan to spend more time at the beach and less at the pool.
We initially had a room on a lower floor and noticed significant noise from the pool area and common spaces. If you are booking here, I strongly recommend requesting a higher floor. The difference in noise level and views is well worth the ask.
I want to be transparent about this. Even in the Presidential Suite, the Westin does not feel like ultra-luxury. The finishes, furnishings, and overall design are clean and comfortable, but they lean more toward upscale chain hotel than boutique luxury. If you are expecting Four Seasons or Ritz-Carlton caliber, you will be calibrating down.
We experienced a few hiccups with the front desk during our stay. Check-in took longer than expected, and there were a couple of miscommunications around room requests. Nothing deal-breaking, but for a resort at this level during peak season, the front desk operations could be tighter.
If you are considering Grand Cayman, the Kimpton Seafire is the other resort I would put on your radar. The Seafire offers a more elevated, polished experience. The design is stunning, the dining is excellent, and it feels more refined overall. It skews a bit more adult and upscale compared to the Westin’s family-forward energy. If you want luxury with a capital L, the Seafire is your pick. If you want a comfortable, beachfront family resort with Marriott benefits, the Westin is a strong option.
The Westin Grand Cayman is a great fit for families looking for a straightforward Caribbean beach resort. It works well for Marriott loyalists who want to use points or enjoy elite benefits. It is also a solid choice for first-time Caribbean travelers who want something easy and reliable.
If you want a quiet, adults-only retreat, this is not your spot during peak season. If ultra-luxury finishes and design are important to you, the Westin will feel a step below what you are looking for. And if you are sensitive to crowds, avoid the holiday weeks.
We had a wonderful New Year’s trip to Grand Cayman, and the Westin gave us exactly what we needed for a family beach vacation. The location is hard to beat, the beach is world-class, and the overall experience was positive. Just go in with the right expectations, request a higher floor, and enjoy one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean.
